Donate Candy, Make A Soldier’s Day

The first day of fall is right around the corner and before you know it, Halloween will be here. That’s why we’re already hard at work planning our annual candy buy back, and we’re letting you know now so you can make plans to be part of the fun.

Last year’s candy buy back generated an overwhelming response. We collected 200 pounds of candy that we sent to Operation Gratitude, which sent it overseas to our men and women serving in the military.

“We were so happy about last year’s great turnout,” says New York City orthodontist Dr. Mark Bronsky. “Our patients were excited to get their friends involved, and local pediatric dental offices gave out bags to their patients so candy could be collected. This truly was a community event.”

Getting the entire community involved is just one factor that makes the project so fun and rewarding. Our patients show their generosity year after year by donating lots of unopened candy to ship overseas. We reward each patient with $1 for each pound of candy they donate, up to five pounds.

Why Donate Your Candy?

While our focus is on community involvement and doing something nice for our troops, there is an orthodontic reason for encouraging our patients to donate certain candies after Halloween.

Some types of candy you get while trick-or-treating could damage your orthodontic appliances. We say avoid the temptation by donating those to the troops! We accept all types of candy, but those we particularly welcome if you’re in braces include:

  • Taffy
  • Bubble gum
  • Jelly beans
  • Candy bars with nuts, toffee or caramel

Remember to brush your teeth after indulging in your Halloween treats. If you don’t have toothpaste and a toothbrush handy, rinsing your mouth with water is a good alternative.

How to Get Involved

If you want to be part of this year’s candy buy back, please bring us your unopened candy between Nov. 3 and Nov. 7. We look forward to seeing your generosity in action once again this year. Keep an eye on our blog, because we’ll report this year’s results in November.
