Invisalign® Vs. Braces At Bronsky Orthodontics

Having crooked or misaligned teeth not only look unsightly, but they also make taking care of your teeth properly much more difficult! At Bronsky Orthodontics our expert orthodontists and staff pride themselves on their experience offering traditional metal braces and Invisalign® aligners to achieve a straighter smile! With their commitment to utilizing state-of-the-art technology, they’re able to offer many efficient orthodontic treatments that are perfectly tailored to you.

While wearing traditional metal braces is the most common way to straighten teeth, they tend to be uncomfortable and sometimes painful to wear. As some people need braces to fix crooked teeth later in life, wearing highly-noticeable metal braces is not always the best option. Invisalign® clear braces are a great, barely noticeable alternative! Below are some opinions on the pros and cons of Invisalign® and traditional metal braces, allowing you to make a more informed decision for your orthodontic treatment plan at Bronsky Orthodontics.

Cosmetic Appearance

Traditional metal braces cause the cosmetic appearance of the mouth to look noticeably different. As the metal archwires and brackets take up a good portion of the teeth. With Invisalign® clear aligners, those problems are non-existent. Choosing Invisalign® lets you feel more confident in your braces, as they oftentimes aren’t noticeable at all. Made with 3D printed thermoplastic material, Invisalign® braces are virtually invisible.

Comfortability

Once traditional metal braces are put into place, they cannot be removed until the recommended duration of treatment. Also, it takes a separate appointment with an orthodontic expert to remove the affixed metal braces from the teeth and mouth. Invisalign®, on the other hand, is completely removable, making it easier to eat or drink without the aligners for short periods of time.

Safety

Although highly unlikely to ever harm you, the metal wires used in braces can poke the inside of your cheeks, and become annoying. A simple solution to this is to apply orthodontic wax to the end of the wire to protect your mouth. Also, if not taken care of properly, other dental issues can arise due to the buildup of plaque next to the braces. Proper oral hygiene is essential all the time, but especially when wearing braces or Invisalign®. Because Invisalign® is made with clear plastic, there is no chance of wire poking your cheek. However, you still have to brush and floss regularly, including after every meal or drink other than water.

Duration of Treatment

While somewhat comparable, braces tend to take longer than Invisalign®. This will vary depending on the severity of treatment and how often patients wear their clear aligners. But in general, if you wear your Invisalign® aligners for the correct amount of time per day, you’ll have a faster treatment time. Invisalign® has a quicker treatment time because there is a more consistent force given to your teeth, where braces can “relax” a little between appointments. Invisalign® also comes with wear indicators that allow parents, teens, and the orthodontist to see if the patient is wearing their aligners for the appropriate amount of time.
