Dentists vs. Orthodontists: What’s the Difference?

Both dentists and orthodontists care for your mouth and teeth, but there are clear differences between each profession and specialty.

  • Dentists keep your mouth healthy with periodic oral hygiene appointments. They diagnose and treat any dental disease including periodontal disease and dental decay. Dentists fabricate and place crowns, bridges, implant restorations, porcelain veneers, cosmetic bonding restorations, and much more. They will also extract failed teeth and teach patients how to prevent dental disease.
  • Orthodontists are dental specialists who attend an additional 2-3 years of training following dental school to focus on bite correction and tooth movement. Orthodontists learn how to modify development of the teeth and jaws in growing patients—a process called dentofacial orthopedics—to favorably modify growth while creating space for the teeth to grow naturally. Orthodontists also are trained in the treatment of adolescent and growing patients and adults. Straight teeth with stable jaw foundations lead to a lifetime of dental health, optimal function, and exceptional dentofacial esthetics.
  • Whether utilizing expanders, bite planes, braces, or clear aligners (Invisalign®), orthodontists are extremely qualified in handling all things related to jaw development, tooth movement, bite correction, and cosmetic appearance of the teeth. Think of orthodontists as the “structural engineers of dentistry” who provide the solid foundation for all other dental work.
